Welcoming New Faculty – George Molina, MD, MPH

Please join us in welcoming George Molina, MD, MPH, as a new faculty member in the Department of Surgery.

George Molina, MD, MPH
Associate Surgeon, Division of Surgical Oncology

Dr. Molina graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BS in cellular and molecular biology. He obtained his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and he completed an MPH in quantitative methods at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in complex surgical oncology at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Hospital Cancer Center and Massachusetts General Hospital.

As part of his general surgery training, Dr. Molina also completed a two-year postgraduate research fellowship at Ariadne Labs, where he worked on projects in health systems innovation and research, global surgery modeling, clinical studies in surgical oncology, surgical safety culture in inpatient and ambulatory settings and impact of a surgical safety checklist program.

He is board certified in general surgery, and he is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO).

Dr. Molina’s clinical and research interests include improving the safety, quality and equity of surgical care through health systems innovation. He is also interested in understanding the impact of fragmentation of cancer care on disparities in surgical outcomes in the United States. Dr. Molina will be conducting his research at the Center for Surgery and Public Health and at Ariadne Labs.

Welcoming New Faculty – Alison Laws, MD

Please join us in welcoming Alison Laws, MD, as a new faculty member in the Department of Surgery.

Associate Surgeon, Division of Breast Surgery

Dr. Laws graduated from the University of British Columbia and obtained her medical degree from McMaster University. She completed a general surgery residency at the University of Calgary and a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

She is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS).

Dr. Laws’ clinical and research interests include optimizing oncologic outcomes after breast cancer surgery, improving cancer care delivery through implementation of evidence-based practices, as well as managing patients at high-risk for breast cancer.

Chandrajit P. Raut, MD, MSc, Appointed Inaugural BWH Distinguished Chair in Surgical Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Chandrajit P. Raut, MD, MSc, chief of Surgical Oncology at Brigham Health and professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, has been appointed the inaugural BWH Distinguished Chair in Surgical Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Raut, who is also the surgery director of the Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is a graduate of Stanford University (BA/BS), University of Oxford (MSc) and Harvard Medical School (MD). He completed a residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Raut is a committed clinician who specializes in the multidisciplinary care of patients with soft tissue sarcoma. He is also a prolific researcher and has a multi-PI R01 grant to evaluate an innovative drug-eluting film to be placed in the surgical bed and reduce tumor local recurrence rates. Additionally, he was co-PI on a multi-institutional phase II clinical trial evaluating five years of adjuvant imatinib for primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), co-investigator on an international phase III randomized clinical trial evaluating the use of preoperative radiation therapy for retroperitoneal sarcomas and a member of The Cancer Genome Atlas Sarcoma (TCGA-SARC) working group of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Dr. Raut serves as section editor for sarcoma in the journals Cancer and Annals of Surgical Oncology, associate editor for the journal Sarcoma and editorial board member for the journal ACS Case Reports in Surgery. He has authored over 210 papers and over 30 book chapters and serves as the program director of the Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare Surgical Oncology Fellowship.
